October 18, 2010 - First appointment!

Introduction

My name is Valerie, and I am 9 weeks and 6 days pregnant today. This is our very first baby, and though we are also very scared, I think it is pretty safe to say that both my husband and I are pretty excited about this new adventure to come!
If I remember correctly, I found out I was pregnant on September 22. It was a Wednesday morning, somewhere around 6:00-6:30 a.m.... My heart started beating real fast and I was half-crying half-giggling, though I was not sure if it was from happiness or from stress. Because that's the way I am, I took another test the following morning (and ended up taking two more tests in the following two weeks... :-) ), and when the little "plus" sign showed up again, I decided that it was time to tell my husband.
As many are, I am sure, this pregnancy was not planned. We had talked about maybe some day having kids, but it was with "ups and downs" and we did not have any plans for the near future. Though we kind of knew it could happen any time as I had been off the pill for a couple of months. Actually, for health reasons, I had asked my husband if we could switch to natural family planning (which he had agreed to, understanding my health concerns), and we had been real careful for 4 months. It took just one time of inattention for things to take another course and a big surprise to come our way! Though my husband stayed very quiet and worried-looking for about 48 hours after I broke the news to him, he slowly warmed up to the news, processed it fully, and then quickly started making jokes about how fat I was going to get, and all. That's when I realized that things were going to be ok! :-)
We waited about two more weeks before we started telling his family; and then two more weeks until my parents came for a visit and we were able to share the news with them in person. To this day, my boss and a handful of very close friends know about the baby; but we are waiting (more or less patiently) for the end of the first trimester to be able to share the news with our extended families and friends!
About two weeks ago, we had the first appointment with our doctor, and we got to "meet" the baby for the first time! It was very exciting and emotional! Even though the doctor was not able to find the baby right away... so there was a little worry building up in the air... but then she found it and all was good! :-)

My goal is to try to blog on a regular basis, about what is going on, projects, struggles, surprises, and anything else coming up during this very special time of our lives. We'll see how good I'll be at this ;-)
